Inspiration explores the relationship between creator and creation. The woman cups a spark within her hands as it forms into a galaxy, shielding it from the darkness around without holding too tightly and snuffing it out. The galaxy is the only light source in the piece, and her hair looks almost nebulous itself, asking the question: “What is the creator without her creation?”
My original intent was to express the experience of artistic creation, but many viewers have interpreted this piece in a more religious way. I find that interpretation to be incredibly powerful, and love that the piece resonates so deeply with them. It seems fitting that my piece about artistic expression gives such a clear example of yet another facet of the creative process: the incredible new meaning that others bring when viewing a piece.
